Welcome to WJES Science Olympiad!

What is Science Olympiad?

The Science Olympiad is a national nonprofit organization devoted to improving the quality of science education, increasing student interest in science, and providing recognition for outstanding achievement in science education by both students and teachers. The Science Olympiad tournaments are academic interscholastic competitions which consist of a series of individual and team events which students prepare for during the year. Most Science Olympiad events are team competitions which require teamwork, group planning and cooperation. The emphasis is on learning, participation, interaction, and having fun.
The Science Olympiad was created in 1983 to expand interest in science for students, and to serve as an alternative to the conventional science fair and tournaments. The Olympiad consists of over 100 individual and team events that require expertise in biology, earth science, chemistry, physics, problem-solving, and technology. Division A is for grades K-6, Division B is for grades 6-9, and Division C is for grades 9-12. Students who participate in the Science Olympiad are taught advanced science through active, hands-on participation. All events involve teamwork, group planning and cooperation, and promote team spirit and good sportsmanship.

How can my child be on the Science Olympiad team?

Members of the West Jefferson Science Olympiad team will be chosen based on teacher recommendations, grades, attendance, & behavior. Students in grades 3-6 are encouraged to sign up. A maximum of 24 students (no more than 8 sixth graders) will be chosen for the team. In some cases an exam may be given to determine who is chosen.

How often will the Science Team practice?

We will practice once a week beginning October 20th through the end of February (usually on Tuesday). If you are considering Science Olympiad, but are already involved in another sport or after school activity, please discuss this with Mrs.Boyd.

How many competitions will the team compete in this year?

The WJES Science Olympiad Team will compete in 2 competitions this year. Both competitions will be held on a Saturday and parents must provide transportation to both events. The first competition will be the Jefferson County Olympiad Competition in January. (Place and time TBA)

We will also compete at the Regional Olympiad Competition in February at Jacksonville High School. Attendance is required at both competitions. Please do not sign up for Science Olympiad if you cannot come to the competitions.
